Ted
Evans was 27 years when on the 16/4/1941 he joined the Australian
Army as a private. During this time in 11th Battalion Signals
Corps Ted learnt the basic skills and disciplines of the Australian
Warrior.
When he started he was on 5/- (5 shillings)
per day. As he progressed through his training he rose to the
dizzy heights of 6s/6d a day. The Australian soldier wages amongst
the highest paid for their time.
Ted transferred to the RAAF on the
6/7.10.42 and joined the Number 4 Initial Training School Victor
Harbour Flight 3 B Squadron Course 36.
He qualified as an Air Gunner 11/11/43
and was taken across USA and thence to England where he was
posted to 463 Squadron.
He joined the crew of F/O
Cook. K.A. (click for records) as a Mid Upper Gunner and
completed 15 trips over the enemy territory. After F/O Cook.
K.A. was posted to No 9 Squadron, Ted joined the crew of F/O
Leonard R.A. (click for records) as Mid Upper Gunner. His
total trips with this crew were 4 before he was shot down over
Mersburg Leurna. All the crew on this mission were POW until
release at the end of the war. Ted has spoken of the hit by
the Radar Controlled Flak and claims that "Since the Aircraft
was hit in the Bomb Bay with a full load of bombs (they had
not yet made their run and they were flying decoy for the Path
Finders), every day alive since then has been a bonus".
The WA News paper of the day reports
that "Bomber Command sent out 1100 planes to attack the
Leuna synthetic plants and which was ringed by half as many
guns as Berlin, the King of Targets. See Clipping opposite.
Ted, as a prisoner of war survived
the internment with the help of trading with the Russian POW's
and to that end his Dulag Luft record was preserved and presented
to him by one of the Russian Prisoners.
In May 1945, after an arduous internment,
Ted was released by the Americans. He recalls a very large tank
being driven through the gate and the POW's knew the war had
caught them up and they were now free.
