Hit by flak and downed.

A425021 F/O Samuel Johns DFC (19.7.44) and crew posted to 467 Sq 12.4.44. Lost on their 29 op 29.7.44.

24/25.6.44 Attacking Prouville they were attacked by a night fighter, the A/C was badly damaged and set on fire. The rear gunner F/S Fallon was blown out of his turret without his parachute, and the fire forced the mid upper gunner to bail out. After a lengthy battle the fire was controlled and the A/C and remaining 5 crew reached Waddington.

28/29.7.44. After attacking Stuttgart, the A/C was hit by heavy flak on the way home. The crew battled on but came down in the sea shortly after crossing the enemy coast. They managed to inflate and board the dingy, but battling against wind and tide were unable to make headway towards England. On the 3rd day they were picked up by the Germans and were POW.
