24/25.7.44. F/O Sweeney.M.F and crew flying LM223 JO.P to Stuttgart was shot up by heavy flak. The tail wheel and an elevator were shot of, and the rear gunner was slightly wounded. They made an excellent landing minus the tail wheel. |

27/28.9.44. They were shot up in LL844 JO.R but this time there were no wheels, so a wheels up landing had to be made at Waddington. This was perfectly carried out although they were aware that at least one 2000 lb H.E bomb was hung up in the bomb bay. F/O Sweeney earned a DFC for this.
