F/O Sanders.N.W was posted to No 5 L.F.S. 1.9.44 with 35 ops to his tour.

8/9.6.44. On the op to Rennes ED611 JO.U blew a tyre on take off and caused Noel Sanders and crew a few moments of anxiety before they became airborne.

According to Noel Sanders DFC….. Noel tells us that it was more than a few moments of anxiety.

He had to jump the A/C over the fence to get airborne because if he had of gone in he would have blown half of Waddington away.

Then over the target "Rennes" they had difficulty in locating the aiming point and were hit by flak with fairly extensive damage (43 holes in the A/C including a punctured main petrol tank). The navigator was narrowly missed by flak. The flak passed through the floor cutting the navs right shoe, cutting his trousers and passing out through the top of the fuselage. On return there was poor visibility at Waddington and they were diverted to Carmody crash airdrome. With good crew work they were able to make a landing on one wheel without further damage or injuries. It took a week of work for the maintenance section to get JO.U back in action. Awarded the DFC on completion of tour.
