8/9.4.45. In the op to Lutzendorf ME478 was hit by heavy flak and became uncontrollable the crew were able to abandon the A/C in the air. They returned to Waddington, although the date of their return is not given, there is a report by the pilot in Orbs. |

Pilots report in Orbs. Attacking Lutzendorf 8/9.4.45 at 16000 ft on supporters run A/C was hit by heavy predicted flak in both wing roots cutting port and starboard engine. A/C sank to 8000 ft the crew were instructed to prepare to abandon A/C then tried to reach Jouvencourt, then starboard outer engine cut and A/C could not maintain height at 3200ft and the crew bailed out. Pilot walked for 9 hours before contacting allied troops and the other crew members all walked for many hours but all eventually contacted allied troops and are safe. |
