W/C Donaldson DFC was posted from 460 Sq to command 463 Sq succeeding W/C Kingsford-Smith. He had completed 14 ops on 460 Sq.

He sent his crew on leave while he got established .He took a new crew who had lost their pilot (Bill Gossip) on his 2nd pilot trip to Prouville, and they were shot down. Don Donaldson and some of the crew evaded capture and returned to Waddington.

F/L Cyril Small was severely wounded and eventually repatriated through the Swiss Red Cross.

Donaldson’s original crew completed their tours of ops with other pilots, except Barry Dillon who was KIA with Tottenham 25/26.9.44.
