5/6.3.45. Bohlen 2 Pilot. Shot up and Crashed landed at Jouvencourt. NG401 JO.G was hit on the bombing run by a heavy shell, all navigation equipment was damaged and both gunners wounded. Belford was reluctant to abandon the A/C as the wounded men needed attention, he asked F/O Wheeler for a course for Jouvencourt the nearest airdrome in allied territory, without navigation equipment the nav made a perfect course, they made a spectacular one wheel landing. On touch down one wheel was torn off and the A/C swung around, they are credited as being the only crew to successfully land a Lancaster backwards. See the story in True Tales Landing Lancasters Backwards. |

|
Note:- the crew were on ops again 17 days later with 2 replacement gunners and had completed 29 ops by the time the war finished 8.5.1945. |
