F/L Pat Andersen and crew completed 32 Ops several of which were nasty, including l shaky 3 engine return and 1 badly flak damaged A/C with a severely wounded rear gunner. This is from an email by Kevin Peters, nephew of Albert John Smith DFM Tail Gunner. From Kevin Peters [knpeters@fedex.com] According the brief summary in the service record
regarding my uncle's DFM citation it states that he was severely wounded
by flak shrapnel in the chest and upper arms while on a low level
daylight raid against enemy gun emplacements. The date was 23/10/44
(which per the Target listing was date of a raid on Flushing. (Per
the sqn diary on your site, Flushing was an enemy gun battery target
that was attacked on daylight raid.)
His service records continue with the statement
that despite these severe injuries my uncle never informed the
pilot of the that he was hit, instead he continued to give the pilot
lengthy accurate reports of enemy ground fire bearings and evasive
maneuvering directions instructions that lead safe recovery to
both A/C and crew. His service record further state that my uncle
completed a 27 Op missions. Per the record date of the end of
his hospitalization it appears that was his last Ops mission.
