I have some amazing pictures of Lancasters that were taken in the 40's. These include S for sugar and others from the same squadron. I have never seen them in books so I would imagine they are rare. If you would like to contact me it would be nice to let others see them who maybe flew in them all those years ago. Their are also many other Lancs from other squadrons.

Not a comment - as I have found your site excellent. I was searching for a family relative known to be KIA - who I found belonging to the crew of F/O Miller KIA 27/28/9/44. It mentions it was the crews first operation - would this be the actual first operation by all crew members of as a new crew in this Lancaster? I hope you can help me and I thank you for your help. Again an excellent website.

A truly remarkable site and fascinating information. Sincere thanks for your efforts. Through your site I was able to learn that Scampton is still very much with us. Some time ago I was informed that this station is no more and that much of the airfield has been developed to modern day industry. I couldn't believe that such an important part of our heritage could be tossed aside with such irresponsible disregard for all those who fought and died for their country. Needless to say, I was delighted to find your site with all this incredible information. I have recently retired from the police service in Cornwall and I am now undertaking some local research into W/C Guy Gibson of 617 fame and trying to find out if there are any relatives of his in the Porthleven district (Close By) who would be willing to talk to me. I know that he spent a lot of time around here, They named a street after him in the village. If you know of anyone who could assist me I would be most grateful. Whenever I visit old wartime airfields, I, like so many others I'm sure, experience a strange sad feeling with a lump in my throat. I do hope our younger generation learn not to forget. Sincere thanks once again.
Peter Mcpherson.

On the 25th, ANZAC Day, I had the privilege to attend the memorial service at RAF Waddington. It was well attended as usual, and I, as a second cousin of an RAF Flight Engineer posted to 463, listened in awe and wonderment to the tales told over a beer, and also felt proud to be mixing with these outstanding men. Unfortunately my relation Flight Engineer Sgt. O.Smart, Flying with P/O M.E.Pratten in ME571 did not return, like so many, but they will not be forgotten as long as excellent sites like this and the associations both here and in Australia allow us to remember. Thank You and keep up the good work .

I noted from the “Lost in Action -463 Sqdn” page that Lancaster NG193 (pilot F/O R.Aleonard) crashed on operations to Merseburg – Leuna on 14-15/01/1945 and that reference was made to this in the document "History of 463 Sqdn." by Bill Hodges. Wondered whether you could give me publishing details of this document and where I might obtain it from.

I would be so grateful if you could get me a list of his crew and details of their whereabouts, if any. My dad is 81 years old and as fit as a fiddle. It would be so wonderful for him to speak to old friends. Many thanks for this opportunity Alicia Rooney.

My Dad also became a pilot and I can remember him telling me about his Uncle Derek Schubert who flew on the Lancaster bombers. I heard on the news tonight that you had a reunion and decided to look at your web site. I have just been able to find out that he was a member of 467 Squadron and was interested to learn a little of what these courageous men endured. I am looking forward to telling my Dad as he was unaware of the details of his Uncle. Unfortunately my grandmother passed away a short time ago. I am the grandson of Eric Evans, Rear Gunner in Lancaster NF990, Call name JO Q for Queenie, shot down November 6th 1944. Mission details on the site are correct except I do not believe that all of the crew were taken POW. At least one was KIA - straifed by a ME-110 whilst standing astride open bomb doors (after plane had been terminally damaged by flak). Please let me know how this tallies with your records. Also, the call name is incorrectly labeled as JO-P not JO-Q. Finally, I have my grand father's detailed account of the mission (he is still alive) - would this be of interest for your site? Kind regards.

He was a rear gunner and completed all 30 missions ending as a W/O and gunnery instructor. He did fly some ops in "S" Sugar which is now in the RAF museum at Hendon. I was Freddy Merrill's rear gunner, but because of a 'flu epidemic', did my first op. with P/O Hemsworth on 3/4.12.43. The remaining 44 trips were with Freddy, quite a few of them with the RAF Film Production Lanc. Regarding the death of Bert Turner on 20/21.1.44, this was caused by a small piece of flak that cut the oxygen supply to the mid-upper turret. He became anoxic, was sick into his mask and choked. When unconscious he kept his hand on the control, so the turret kept turning, and it took Rawsthorne, O'Toole, and Hall to get him out. I went back to help after we left the enemy coast, but by that time it was clear that he was dead. I think the site is excellent and I am sure I will spend quite a while searching it.

We have recently completed a website honoring the memory of Flight Sergeant Harry Hansell RCAF, an air gunner who died in a Halifax bomber (434 Squadron) over Germany in 1943. His very personal story was in many ways typical of hundreds of Canadian boys, yet his father the Honorable Ernest G. Hansell M.P. was able to determine many details of his war service that often were never known by families who lost sons or husbands under similar circumstances. HARRY'S STORY can be read at http://www.my.intergate.ca/bhansell/
Authors Comment: - I have visited this story and it is great reading for those interested in Bomber Command WWII. The site is well laid out, easy to navigate, and full of pictures.

Dear Sir, My father was a witness of the Lancaster crash in Langemark, Flanders Fields, Belgium in the night of 10/11 May 1944. The pilot was Squadron Leader Mervyn POWELL. The plane crashed in a flooded clay pit on my grandfathers property and the crew was KIA. The body of the aircraft was almost intact and the Germans took it out for recovery. In short time wrecks of other planes were brought to the site. There is a picture of young schoolgirls standing in front of a Lancaster Pilots compartment showing clearly " DAME SANS MERCY ", the mission signs and the ribbon of a Distinguished Flying Cross. Therefore we think that this is Powell's aircraft, knowing he was awarded a DFC. We have a small group of enthusiasts in Langemark community who supported by the town council, erect monuments for historical dates and events. We have already erected a memorial for the crash-landing and the safe return of a B17 USAAF February 1945. We have enough info about Powell's crew and aircraft but could you inform us about: - was " Dame sans mercy " his aircraft, - do you have pictures of that particular aircraft, - do you have a clear drawing of " Dame sans mercy " - do you have pictures of his Lancaster LL882 We have a lot of WW1 Australian history in Flanders fields and it would be very nice to erect a small memorial for 463 Squadron on the crash site, but therefore we need more info of the Lancaster.

Absolutely brilliant site, just a couple of small errors I hope you won't mind . My uncle, W.H.Morgan was a F/O in the RAF. On the crew list of 467 SQN, F/O Mitchell G.D. he is shown as P/O in RAAF(KIA 13/7/43). Incidentally, the story of his final flight and pictures of the actual wreckage were published in Aeroplane Monthly of January 1991, I have a copy. Many thanks for an excellent site!

In the diary entries, on 5/1/45 the pilot of PB697 JO-R was Milne, not Mirne. The information you give about the squadrons is outstanding. I can't take anymore in at the moment and will have another look at the website on another day.

Very interesting to see S-Sugar pictures on sale. I flew in McClelland's crew in 1943 at Bottesford and Waddington in R5868. Is Dusty Miller in contact with you? Do you have his address?

A wonderful site. Discovered purely by accident when I was searching for an old style flying helmet to wear at a "Murder" party. My father-in-law, F.W. Dixon, flew with both squadrons & like all veterans is loathe to talk about his wartime experiences. He did open up later to one of his nephews who wrote a very good article about Frank, but there were still many gaps which this site has helped fill in.

Fantastic site that is full of information and great pictures. It's a must for anyone who is looking for any information on a friend or relative. One suggestion is if you could ask all ex-RAF personnel who are regulars to your web site if they could let you know of any names they remember and in this way it may jog a few memories and bring new information to the site.

Thanks for a wonderful site. My Dad was in the 467 Squadron and was shot down over Mailly Le Camp in May 1944. His Pilot was Col Dickson. I was wondering if you could correct a few things regarding my father. His initials are R I Hunter (Robert Isiah), not R D Hunter as mentioned in the site. Also he was in the RAAF, one of three Australians in the crew, along with Stan Jolly and Hilton Forden. After they were shot down, Dad became a prisoner in a hospital in Troyes - he was very badly burnt, and Stan escaped. I would very much appreciate it if you could correct these three facts as it is important that they are accurate. However I think you have done a wonderful job of such a massive task.
Regards Janet O'Brien

Thank you for helping us to know more of our brother's story with 463 (Wilkinson JAH, lost on July 28/29, 1944. The amount of information and the work needed to assemble this is very impressive and it is a fresh insight for the younger generations of a history to be proud of. Many thanks, Bob Wilkinson

G'day Peter
My name is Yves Fohlen...SOME of your countrymen are saying that I am the most Aussie French man...for almost 29 years I have been studying the Great War....I focused my study about the Australian and British war effort. In France as a battlefield guide..I am used to help Aussies in their Remembrance.
Today I am off duty..I have visited your website..a fascinating one and a tribute to those who flew over Europe...to give us Freedom.
Thanks for your website.. be sure that in Froggies' land WWII RAAF crews are not forgotten... they did not suffer or fall in vain...because today I am free.
Lest We Forget.
Yves Fohlen

My grandfather was in squadron 467 from Jan '43 - Jan '44 but you are missing his initials in the list of crews. He is Walder P.A -- Gunner MU and tail. He received the DFM. He has just celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary and would be interested to know of any surviving crew members.

I was a teenager in Manchester in the 1950s and had a happy, carefree life. Reading these stories of the bomber crews has made me realize how much I owe to them for the freedom I enjoyed. To be over Germany at 20,000 feet being fired at by fighter planes and guns from the ground required the highest courage. That they should do it time and again was almost unbelievable. What a great place in history those young men have. So many died in the prime of their lives. How different my youth would have been had the Nazis won.

Hello and congratulations on an absolutely superb website! I am researching the Friedrichshafen raid on 20 June 1943 prior to writing a book about it and I have uncovered an absolute mine of information here about 467 Squadron's participation! I would love to hear from any of the surviving crews who took part in that first "shuttle" raid or anyone in fact who was involved in any way. Once again congratulations on your fine tribute to the brave men of the RAAF.

No one has remembered F.O. Ernest Francis Geroge Haddlesey He received the DFC and was shot down and lots his leg. He was with the plane S for Sugar. He spent 8 months in Germany as a prisoner of war. His last flight may have been with an Ausy Crew. But he was Canadian first last and always.

My father the late Ewen MacKinnon served with 467 Squadron during 1944 to 1945. He was a mid upper gunner in this Squadron. We as his family, His wife Theresa and his children are proud of his service to his country of Australia and his service in 467 Squadron during World War 2. I as one of his sons am pleased to add my tribute to this web site. But more so proud to be associated by family links to 467/463 Squadrons, due to my father serving in the RAAF. I am proud of my father Ewen MacKinnon and his fellow airman who flew in defence of Australia and the Commonwealth of Nations operating out of England during a period of history. These brave men were defending our liberties and our freedoms for generations to come. God bless the men and women who served in these 2 Squadrons during WW2. For they paid the sarcifice for us to live in peace. Most came home to families but an amount of men didn't and to those men who died during WW2 in service to our country i pay this tribute to them

My grandfather was a rear gunner in a Lancaster Bomber. I am not sure what squadron but he was English. His name was Roland Skelton Page. He managed to survive 6 years of war.
Also on another note, my father who has had his pilots license since 1968 was taught to fly by none other than Max Johnson at Geelong Airport, the Lancaster Pilot. He said he was a 'seat of your pants' flyer. If you want any more information contact me through email.

Thank you for the help in tracing my uncle, George Edward Carrington. My mother didn't know who to ask, and you have helped her a great deal. I would be interested to know. who were on board that last flight to Harburg, and also where they were based. Mum thought it was in Lincolnshire.
